How to Style Flared Jeans for Men: 7 Outfits That Actually Work

Flared jeans went from niche to everywhere in about two years. Done right, a flare makes your legs look longer, stacks beautifully over sneakers and gives a simple outfit real shape. Done wrong, it looks like a costume. The difference comes down to three things: the fit up top, the length at the bottom, and keeping the rest of the outfit clean.

First, get the fit right

A good men's flare sits close through the hip and thigh and opens up from the knee. If the jeans are baggy everywhere, the flare disappears and you just look like you are wearing wide jeans. Length matters even more: a flare should be long enough to cover most of your shoe and stack slightly at the ankle. Too short and the whole look collapses.

Not sure about your size? Check our denim size chart. Our flares are cut with long inseams on purpose, so they stack properly.

1. Flares + chunky sneakers + plain tee

The easiest starting point. A washed flare like the Shadow Flare, a heavyweight white or black tee and a chunky sneaker. The bulk of the shoe balances the width at the hem, and the plain tee keeps all the attention on the silhouette.

2. Flares + hoodie

For everyday wear, pair a darker flare with a clean hoodie. Keep the hoodie fitted at the waist or slightly cropped so the jeans keep their shape. Our Blanc Hoodie in black or grey works with almost every wash.

3. Black flares, all-black fit

Pure Black Denim with a black longsleeve and black boots or sneakers. Monochrome is the fastest way to look put together, and black flares make the silhouette look long and sharp.

4. Flares + graphic longsleeve

A statement top and a statement leg can work together if the colours stay simple. Try a cream graphic piece like the No Copy Longsleeve with a grey or black flare. Let the print be the only loud thing in the outfit.

5. Flares + suede jacket

Flares have 70s roots, and suede plays into that without looking retro. A boxy grey suede jacket over a white tee with washed grey flares is one of the strongest autumn fits you can build.

6. Waxed or textured flares as the centrepiece

When the jeans have a special finish, like the waxed coating on the A1 Waxed Jeans or the paint splatter on our Flared Splashed Jeans, build everything else around them in neutral colours. Grey, black and cream let the denim do the talking.

7. Wide-leg flares for a baggier look

If you like more volume, go for a wide-leg flare. Balance it with a slightly boxy top. Avoid huge oversized hoodies here, or you lose all shape.

Shoes that work with flared jeans

  • Chunky sneakers: the default. Volume at the toe balances the hem.
  • Boots: square-toe or chunky boots disappear under a flare and add height.
  • Skate shoes: work with washed and distressed flares for a more relaxed look.
  • Avoid: slim running shoes and anything very low-profile. The flare swallows them.

Common mistakes

  • Hemming flares too short. Keep the stack.
  • Wearing a top that is too long. It cuts your legs off visually.
  • Mixing too many statement pieces at once.
