Bootcut vs Flared vs Straight Jeans: Which Fit Is Right for You?

Jean fits get confusing fast. Bootcut, flare, straight, wide-leg, baggy: they sound similar, but each one changes how an outfit looks. Here is the simple version, so you can pick the right pair the first time.

The quick comparison

Fit Thigh Knee to ankle Best for
Straight Relaxed Same width all the way down Everyday, works with everything
Bootcut Close to regular Opens slightly from the knee Balancing chunkier shoes and boots
Flared Close-fitting Opens clearly from the knee Making legs look longer, statement fits
Baggy / wide-leg Loose Wide all the way down Relaxed streetwear, comfort

Straight jeans

The most versatile option. Straight jeans hang in one line from hip to ankle and work with sneakers, boots and almost any top. If you are building a wardrobe from scratch, start here. Try the Drift Denim, Mason Denim or Noir Crystal Denim.

Bootcut jeans

A bootcut opens slightly below the knee. It was made to fit over boots, and that small opening also balances chunky sneakers nicely. It is the subtle middle ground between straight and flared. See our Ripped Bootcut Jeans.

Flared jeans

A flare is fitted through the thigh and opens clearly from the knee. It makes legs look longer and gives an outfit a strong silhouette. If you want your jeans to be the statement, go flare: the Shadow Flare, A1 Waxed Jeans and Pure Black Denim are good places to start. For styling ideas, read how to style flared jeans.

Baggy and wide-leg jeans

Loose everywhere, built for comfort and stacking. Baggy denim is the base of most streetwear fits right now. Look at the Studded Jeans or Flared Wide-Leg Jeans, and see our baggy jeans outfit guide.

Which fit suits you?

  • Shorter guys: flares and straight fits with a slight stack make legs look longer. Avoid very wide, very short hems.
  • Taller guys: you can carry wide-leg and baggy fits easily, and long flares look great on you.
  • Athletic thighs: straight, baggy and bootcut give room where you need it. Very fitted flares can feel tight in the thigh.
  • Not sure: start with straight, then add a flare or baggy pair once you know what you like.

Getting the size right

Fit matters more than the cut. Our size chart shows waist sizes and the weight and height range for each size. Most of our denim fits true to size. Size up if you want a baggier look.
